In this video, Ross Rosenberg discusses his “Good Parent Narratives” concept, which is featured in his new book, The Human Magnet Syndrome: The Codependent Narcissist Narcissist Trap.
The following comes directly from the book: ” Critical to the child’s psychological survival is the narcissist’s ability to discern and adapt to a one-dimensional good-parent fantasy. They construct a fictional repackaging of their life in which their trauma and shameful memories, feelings, and thoughts are replaced with an illusion. Each good-parent narrative consists of a distorted and untrue life story that recasts the narcissist into the role of victim-turned-hero. By virtue of being a parent, the narrative allows them to experience the love, appreciation, and validation that have been absent their entire life. This narrative also gives the narcissist even more psychological distance from their malignant feelings of being fundamentally inadequate or broken.
For the good-parent fantasy to have its intended effect, the story requires the “gifted” child to abandon their actual life story for that of the narcissistic parent’s. This form of psychological manipulation is considered gaslighting and will be discussed in detail in Chapter Eleven. It occurs when the narcissistic parent forcefully places their “virtual reality goggles” onto the child, all the while coercing and manipulating them into abandoning their real/accurate perceptions and adopting the parents’ skewed views.”
