Meggy’s life was not easy from the very beginning. She came into this world in a poor family of ordinary workers. Her father liked to drink. At first, he drank on weekends, then more and more often he went on binge-drinking sprees for weeks on end.
After a while, Maggi’s mother also started drinking. By the time Meggy went to school, the family was below the poverty line. There were days when there was not even a crust of bread in the house.
Her grandmother, on her mother’s side, helped as much as she could. From her small pension, she tried to buy her granddaughter clothes, stationery and at least some toys.
Grandmother was already 75-years-old. She loved her granddaughter very much and felt very guilty in front of her for her own daughter treating her child so horribly. She would have loved to take Meggy with her, but her health did not allow it.

She never saw her parents again. And in ninth grade, her grandmother died as well. Meggy grieved for a long time, but she had to move on with her life. Moreover, she and her grandmother had a dream. They decided a long time ago that Meggy would learn to be a cook. Her grandmother had worked all her life as a cook in a canteen. She loved to cook and taught her granddaughter a lot when she visited her.
