Keeping the Baby Warm

This educational video shows ways to protect the baby from becoming too cold or too hot during the first days of life. While the primary audience is intended to be frontline health workers in the developing world, it is used worldwide to educate health care providers so that they can provide better care for newborns and help save lives.

Newborns need help to keep their body temperature normal – not too cold and not too hot. Babies cannot regulate their body temperature like adults and they are especially at risk of getting cold. A low body temperature is harmful to newborns and increases their risk of illness and death. It is important to keep the baby’s body temperature normal throughout the newborn period. Skin-to–skin contact, delayed bathing, and loose warm clothing are key.
